There are a number of technological factors that have to be heated competition between all the different TV service providers causes. The most important technological innovations that are trying to use most of these companies to attract new subscribers is HDTV. HDTV provides a TV image to a very large screen image of films, both in form and degree of detail in the picture. It also offers a high quality audio format in the form of Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundthat a total of six speakers surround the audience with the sound that should be used with what is happening on the screen HDTV.

It should be obvious that, at least theoretically, a provider of TV services that offer more than the HDTVChannels will be to overcome the fact that most subscribers. Salting online HDTV channels is easier said than done, though. At first, because not only that many HDTV channels available to offer. Recently, however, there are a lot of HDTV channels are available, but not all TV service provider has the bandwidth needed to transmit all who want it.

The limitations of the bandwidth are of particular interest to the cable TV company, simply because not doing soavailable bandwidth, the satellite TV companies. This makes it much harder for them, as many channels as satellite TV can offer to businesses. This is a new technology that is rapidly implemented by cable companies, which existed before the loss of play HDTV, but was unable to save. This technology is called switched digital video, and exceeds the limits of bandwidth by using a cable-television operators to provide only the sender that a participant may be noted that the participants, it wasget rid of their existing bandwidth to offer more channels. This means that a company of Cable TV in theory able to offer HDTV channels than they want. This also means that cable television companies are well prepared for the data from multiple formats of a High-intensity, such as HDTV and 3D Ultra HDTV will soon be available.

The satellite TV industry was in a better position to begin with, if they offer more HDTV channels, and comes despite the threat posed by cable TV companies with theirSwitched Digital Video Technology (which are not equipped with satellite transmissions, by the way) to work, the satellite TV companies can also compete in the realm of HDTV. The approach of the satellite TV company is more than the brute force of nature, which increases the available bandwidth, so they can spend more HDTV channels. This concerns only the introduction of more satellites.

The high level of competition has led to some strange movements on the part of companiesthe struggle for more participants. For example, a cable TV company has reported its new satellite company to use the situation, the most HDTV channels on cable TV have to offer. But the cable company that supports switched digital video can be offered more channels. The cable television company seems more interested in discussing the point in court, as in reality the implementation of the technology, which offers the available channels.

Like everything else, when the TV is involved, theResults of this competition will be determined by technology, business, and ultimately, human nature.

FILE FORMATS

There are different audio formats in general use. There are fewer video formats, audio / video file extensions can be confusing. This is only a brief description of what the most common audio and video file formats and systems.

AAC: Advanced Audio Coding This is the format of audio files from iTunes Music Store to be used, and can be displayed with the file extension M4A. It's better than MP3 for sound quality. E 'was developedas part of the MPEG-4 owned by Dolby (see below).

AU: This audio file format is the standard used by Java, Sun and Unix.

MPEG: Moving Pictures Expert Group There are a number of MPEG-type well, as described below.

MPEG-1: This is used in digital cameras and camcorders for video clips of small size. VHS quality can be expected to play MPEG-1.

MPEG-2: Used for digital satellite TV, DVD recording and professional recording movies from homeRecordings. Has provision for multi-channel surround sound recordings.

MPEG-3 MPEG-3 was proposed as a company, but eventually merged into MPEG-2.

MPEG-4: This is the latest MPEG system and is used for streaming content on the Internet. E 'also suitable for portable video recorders and Internet downloads. Required for DivX. Improves digital broadcasting and interactive graphics and multimedia.

MP3 digital audio files, most commonly usedConservation and reproduction of music. Compresses files to about 10% of a normal audio file and a normal music track is great about 5 -6 MB. MP3 stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, MPEG-3 not believe how many. A typical MP3 audio file is near CD quality.

OGG: A sound file format supports a wide range of codecs, the most popular of these is the Vorbis audio codec. However, MP3 files, supports much broader Vorbis.

RA: Real Audio This format was developedfor streaming audio over the Internet. This is a self-contained format with all the audio information stored in the file itself.

WAV: The simplest of audio formats, developed by Microsoft and IBM, and integrated into Windows 95 is an uncompressed audio files with large file sizes (10 x), MP3, and needs no further elaboration on play. The WAV file consists of three blocks of information: The RIFF block of the file as a WAV file, the format block identifiesparameters such as sample rate and the block of data that contains the actual data sample music or identified.

WMA: Windows Media Audio A digital system invented by Microsoft and are used in portable digital audio players. With the WMA, a file can be programmed so that they will not be copied and can be used to protect copyrights.

WMF: Windows Media audio-video format from WMA files and video codec. They offer high quality and safety for the mediaStreaming and download-and-play applications on computers.

For streaming and downloadable WMV: Windows Media Video using Windows Media Player, which is, and play audio and video content is used.

When it comes to audio and video file formats, you see, sometimes the term "codec". A codec) is just short for encoder-decoder (or compressor – decompressor. An essential function of a codec for compressing audio or video data streams, so that the digital transmission of audio samplesVideo frame can be accelerated, and reduces storage space.

The aim of all the codecs is to reduce the file size to a minimum, audio and video quality. A brief reference to the position of the codec is in the process of transmission and reception:

Video device (eg camcorder) – digital video capture card – Video – Codec (compressed digital info) – result (MPEG2, AVI, WMV, etc) – codec (uncompressed) – video frames – display device.

Between the two codecs, the tabletThe result is to be transferred to the display device continues to store, etc.) transferred. To summarize, the river again, that we have basically described it as:

The raw data – Codec – transfer – Codec – Play

It 'simple, but it shows where to use the codec. Therefore, in order to play a movie, video or music from a certain format, you need a codec on your computer to unzip the file and play.

Here are some free software that controls what a video codecSystem uses and what codec your system need to play:

Codec Tool.

The different video formats are required to meet the diversified needs of video equipment. Similarly, audio formats to the needs of specific methods of delivery and storage and playback equipment from large companies like Microsoft, Sony and Apple has to be done. So, Sony has invented the UMD (Universal Media Disc) for PSP (PlayStation Portable) and Apple AAC (M4A)iPod.

Denon AVR-788 Dolby Digital Surround Receiver Review

Superior sound quality and surround processor, plenty of power, easiest setup ever. Setup is done out of the box, yes this system can do so many things, but the default from the factory works on its own. No configuration is needed. I use banana plugs for my speakers, so the speakers are plug and play (12 gauge wires). In addition to the speaker I have 3 cables, that is it: one HDMI from the HD cable box, one from the DVD and a third to the TV. Cables are plugged, ready to go! For front speakers I am using a pair of JBL pro control 30 connected to speaker B. I have pair of JBL speakers connected to speaker A, except they have 15 inch woofers, so they are bi-amped, and yes the 788 can drive 3 pairs of front speakers thru three separate front channels. This in addition to the powered sub and surround speakers. The sound is AWSOME. All are controlled by a Harmony remote! my 2 year old has no problem using it
I cannot believe the price, you can spend more on the 789 or the 889 if you want the extra HDMI input and the video upscaling. My favorite if you can afford it is the 3809, or 4308 if you want WIFI. Or the pioneer elite VSX 94TXH. You will be getting a lot more features and power..

Please not this receiver DOES NOT support Dolby True HD, the format used with blue ray disks. It does support Dolby digital. You will notice the difference if you have all 7 plus sub high quality speakers (NOT CHEAP SATELLITE).

Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Review

I’ve been an Onkyo fan for years now. This is my 5th Onkyo receiver in about 9 years or so. I’ve upgraded for feature set rather than anything being ‘wrong’ with the prior models I’ve had. This is the highest end model I’ve purchases thus far. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep this one around for quite a while. It’s more than I needed but I was tired of upgrading and wanted something with enough HDMI inputs and features that I wouldn’t get the itch.

I have a standard 5.1 surround system for speakers so I am not using the Audyssey DSX or ProLogic IIz functionality. Nor am I using the multiple zones at this time so I have no comment on that functionality.

Things I like:
Audyssey MultiXT – I’ve had versions of Audyssey in all but maybe the first Onkyo receiver I’ve had. I don’t know whether they changed something or I’ve gotten better at setting my HT system up properly but after running through the Audyssey speaker setup on this receiver everything sounded much more balanced and even than the setup I had gotten with my previous TX-SR705. The ’sweet spot’ is wider and I’m not getting the slight tonal shift as audio moves from one speaker to the next across the front speakers like I used to.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume – This is a fantastic feature! All of my audio for everything is piped through this receiver, whether I’m watching TV, Movies, Music or playing games. With my previous receivers I was always fumbling for the volume when I was watching a show and the commercials came on since they were so much louder. I don’t have to do that any more. I have the Dynamic Volume feature set to Light. It makes soft passages loud enough to hear and tones down loud passages, and when the commercials come on they aren’t any louder than the tv show I was watching. I do have one quibble with it. There doesn’t seem to be a feature to turn it off/on based on the source you’ve selected. Having this feature on when listening to music is a not a good thing. This isn’t a problem with Audyssey, rather an oversight on Onkyo’s part.

THX Loudness – I’ve never really used the THX audio modes of my previous receivers much. Primarly because in order to get the sound approaching that in a theater THX recommends listening at reference volume. There are two problems with that. I live in an apartment and I like not to bleed from my ears. The THX Loudness feature works kinda like the Audyssey Dynamic volume. I find that on some movies the THX method sounds better to me than the Audyssey Dynamic Volume.

Internet radio, Pandora and streaming – The interface for this could use some work (it looks like something from the 90’s) but I really like the network features. Streaming audio from my PC in the office is more convenient with this than firing up the Xbox or PS3 and it’s one less peice of electronics I have to have running. I also like that the Onkyo will wake up my office pc if it is sleeping when I go to stream audio. I don’t know if this is something with my pc that allows this or not but it is convenient.

Things I don’t like – I thought my TX-SR705 was loud when it did audio or HDMI switching. This is louder. I’m hoping it’s due to beefier switching components. Fortunately this is only an issue at the beginning of movies where they show previews and don’t steal me warnings. Also on cable when watching non-movie channels and the commercials have been broadcast in different audio then the show.

One time issue with zero audio. I was watching a tv show and changed channels. After changing the channel I had zero audio. I thought it was the channel but changing the channel back or selecting a different source (tuner) didn’t fix it. I was able to fix it by unplugging the receiver for about 5 seconds and plugging it back in. This was disturbing but it hasn’t happened since then. If it does I’ll have to call Onkyo and find out what they can do.

Overall I love this receiver even with the odd audio issue I had.

Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Feature

  • 135 Watts per Channel at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.05%, 2 Channels Driven, FTC
  • HDMI Version 1.3a to Support Deep Color, x.v.Color, LipSync, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DVD-Audio, Multichannel PCM, and CEC
  • Audio and 1080p Video Processing via HDMI (6 Inputs and 2 Outputs [Main/Sub])
  • Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz for New Surround Channels
  • Audyssey MultEQ XT to Correct Room Acoustic Problems and to Calibrate Speakers

Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Overview

As Onkyo’s first ever 9.2-channel receiver, the TX-NR1007 combines network capability and advanced A/V processing with a myriad of surround sound speaker possibilities. For instance, you can use Audyssey DSX or Dolby Pro Logic IIz to create an expanded, more immersive 9-channel soundstage for games and movies. Alternatively, you can supplement one of several different 7.2-channel set-ups in your main room with 2-channel sound in a second room. Along with the assurance of THX Ultra2 Plus certification, the TX-NR1007 brings greater convergence to your home entertainment. Audio files from a networked PC or streaming internet radio can be fed to the receiver, and then processed and output with customary Onkyo power and fidelity. Audyssey MultiEQ XT ensures a well-balanced, room-matching speaker set-up, while ISF video calibration and 1080p upscaling via Faroudja DCDi Cinema work to get the most out of your video sources. Merely cherry-picking the specs, though, doesn’t do justice to this mighty receiver-we suggest giving it an audition and letting your own eyes and ears be the judge.

I chose the NAD T785HD over Arcam, Denon and B&K competitors due to the modular upgrade feature. That very nice feature aside, I’ve been really impressed by this AVR. I’ve noticed a lot of people asking the question “Should I buy a Nintendo Wii game console?”. Since its release in November 2006, the wii has dominated the current generation console battle, with its combination of a cheap price point, unique control system, and family values. This isn’t to say that the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 haven’t seen their own successes, but Nintendo seem to have hit a slightly different demographic of consumer, which has lead to an amazing uptake of their console. To determine which console is best for you, requires you to weigh up the current pros and cons of each platform, which hopefully this article will help you out with.

It’s easy to forget that the current generation of consoles has been around a few years now, and the original appeal of each platform has change over the years. Prices have changed, game catalogs have matured, and event he platforms themselves have seen further developments.

Price

Initially the Wii was the cheapest console of the current generation, but this has swapped around a bit recently. The chart below is ordered by UK recommended retail price price ascending, and includes all current versions of each console.

£129.99/$199.99 Xbox 360 Arcade (256MB)

£169.99/$299.99 Xbox 360 Premium (60GB)

£179.99/£249.99 Wii (512MB)

£229.99/$399.99 Xbox 360 Elite (120GB)

£299.99/$399.99 Playstation 3 (80GB)

£339.99/$499.99 Playstation 3 (160GB)

As you can see, the Xbox 360 Arcade is the cheapest game console available, and it undercuts the Wii by and an impressive £50/$50. The biggest downside of the Arcade model is the lack of substantial storage space, so for UK consumers the premium version is slightly more appealing with its 60GB hard drive, and price point which is £10 less than the Wii. You should note that these are only recommended retail prices, so you can most likely get them slightly cheaper if you hunt around various retailers.

The Wii has been in constant short supply since its release, so appears to hold its value significantly better that the other consoles, and is less susceptible to discounted prices. Also unlike the other consoles, the Wii has not seen a single official price reduction since its release, and is expected not to change until the supply finally exceeds demand.

Graphics

The Wii is often described as being based on the last generations hardware, with it having very similar performance to the Nintendo GameCube. Despite this, it’s proved a very easy platform to develop games for, and Nintendo themselves have shown that they can squeeze every last drop of graphics performance out of it, with titles such as Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime.

It’s very obvious that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have graphics potential way beyond the Wii, and they have already produced some stunning looking games. There isn’t a lot between the two consoles themselves, with cross platform titles looking pretty similar on both bits of hardware. It will still be another year or so before we see the true potential of these consoles, but that’s something to look forward to.

It’s important to note that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 do 1080p hi-def output, which looks great on your massive TV. The wii unfortunately will only do a maximum of 480p, which can’t start looking pretty rubbish on bigger screens. There are many rumours that Nintendo will offer an upgraded version of the Wii at some point, which will correct this limitation.

Controls

As you may know, the Wii has got funky motion controls, which allow the console to detect how you are swinging the controller around, or if you are pointing it a specific direction. It’s certainly not just a gimmick, and can be very effective, although sometimes games do get it wrong. Luckily, the Wii controls are very good and standard style game play, so games designers are not being restricted by it. The controller consists of a remote (WiiMote) and an optional separate analogue stick (Nunchuck), which are connected together by a short cable. The controls themselves are wireless, and include a built in speaker and rumble effects.

The PS3 also boasts motion controls, but they’ve not been implemented as widely or successfully as the Wii Controllers. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have quite standard style controllers, and come in both wired and wireless form. All versions of the 360 controller have a rumble feature, and so does the latest version of the PS3 controller.

Games

Each console has it’s own set of exclusive titles which are only available on that specific system. Nintendo have been around a while now, and have some long running franchises such as Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. Sony and Microsoft also have some great exclusives, including Grand Turismo and Killzone for the PS3, and Halo and Gears of War for the 360. It’s important for you to identify any specific titles that you wish to play, and checkout which consoles they are available for.

Online Features

Each console supports a variety of online features, including online play, web browsing, and media downloads. Both the Wii and PS3 are free to play games online, while the 360 requires you pay for their subscription service. Many people consider the online features of the Xbox 360 superior to the PS3 and Wii, although all are quite adequate for online play.

Both the Wii and PS3 have web browsers so that you can access the internet, while the 360 lacks this feature for now.

Download-able content varies between consoles. The Wii allows you to download system updates, applications, retro and indie games. The 360 supports everything that the Wii does, but also includes game demos, and TV/Movie Downloads. Currently the PS3s features are very similar to 360, although movie downloads are only currently available in the US.

Hardware Features

Each console has additional hardware features that may influence your decision when purchasing. The Wii and PS3 come with wireless networking as standard, while the xBox 360 comes with an wired ethernet port, and the option to purchase a separate wireless adapter.

The Wii does not support any formats for playing movies. The PS3 supports Blu-ray and DVD playback, the xBox 360 supports DVD playback, and also the now fairly redundant HD-DVD format via an optional external drive.

The Wii is backwards compatible with most GameCube titles, and even supports GameCube control pads via four ports on the top of the console. Current UK versions of the PS3 only support original Playstation titles, and no longer support PS2 games. The xBox 360 will play a wide selection of original xBox games, but you will require a hard drive to play them.

I’m no audiophile, but it’s useful to note how the 3 consoles support surround sound. The Wii simulates it using Dolby Pro-Logic II through an analogue connection, while the 360 and PS3 both support 5.1 surround sound via digital optical connections. It’s important to note that it really comes down to the games, and how well they are designed to support multiple sounds channels.

Conclusion

There are obviously many factors to consider when buying any console, so it’s not always a straight forward decision. So should you buy a Nintendo Wii? Comparing price and features, you may find that the other consoles are more appealing, but if your interested in the motion control, or Nintendo’s exclusive titles, then the Wii may be for you.
